SMS Alerts
Last updated: July 29, 2026
Waterlands SMS Alerts is an optional text-message program for registered Waterlands users. It sends you a text when a river, weather, or water condition you chose to watch actually happens, for example when flow on your home water crosses the threshold you set. We never text you unless you asked us to, and every message relates to an alert you created yourself.
1. What We Send
There are exactly two kinds of message in this program:
- A one-time verification code when you add your phone number, to confirm the number belongs to you.
- Alert notifications for conditions you configured: river flow, gauge height, water temperature, weather, tide, or reservoir thresholds you chose to monitor.
We do not send marketing, promotional, or advertising texts through this program, and we do not text you about anyone else's alerts.
2. Sample Messages
Verification code
Your Waterlands verification code is 481920. It expires in 10 minutes.
Alert notification
Arkansas River high flow. Flow at Salida is 1,240 cfs, above your 1,000 cfs threshold. Reply STOP to opt out.
Alert texts are titled with the name you gave the alert, so you always know which of your own alerts fired, and every one of them carries opt-out instructions.
3. How to Opt In
Opting in takes a deliberate, two-step confirmation inside your account. We cannot enable SMS on your behalf, and no phone number can receive alerts until the code below is entered back into the site.
- Create a free Waterlands account at waterlands.app/register and sign in.
- Go to Notification Settings at waterlands.app/notifications/preferences.
- In the SMS section, enter your mobile number and tick the consent checkbox, which is unchecked by default and reads: "I agree to receive automated text messages from Waterlands at the number provided: a one-time verification code, and alert notifications I set up myself (like river flow or weather thresholds). Message frequency varies based on my alert settings. Message and data rates may apply. Reply HELP for help or STOP to cancel at any time."
- Press Send code. The button stays disabled until the consent box is ticked.
- Enter the 6-digit code we text you to verify the number.
- Create an alert and enable its SMS channel to start receiving notifications.
Because these screens sit behind account login, we can provide a review account or screenshots of the opt-in flow on request. Email support@waterlands.app.
4. Message Frequency
Message frequency varies and is entirely determined by the alerts you create and the conditions on the water. Many users receive only a handful of messages per month; some receive none for long stretches. By default, SMS is reserved for high-priority alerts only, and you can further limit delivery with quiet hours in your notification settings.
5. Cost
Waterlands does not charge for text messages. Message and data rates may apply depending on your mobile plan and carrier. SMS alerts are available on paid Waterlands plans; other notification channels (in-app, email, and push) are available without SMS.
6. How to Get Help
Reply HELP to any Waterlands message for assistance, or email support@waterlands.app.
7. How to Opt Out
Reply STOP to any Waterlands message to cancel at any time. You will receive one final confirmation message and then no further texts. You can also turn SMS off at any time in Notification Settings, or remove your phone number from your account entirely. Opting out of SMS does not affect your account or your other notification channels.
8. Carrier Liability
Carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages. River and weather conditions change quickly and message delivery is not guaranteed. Never rely on an SMS alert as your only source of safety information.
9. Privacy
No mobile information will be shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. Your phone number is used only to deliver the messages described on this page. It is shared solely with our SMS delivery provider for the purpose of sending those messages, and with no one else. See our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service for full details.
