Duck School
Everything in the Sky, In One Lesson
You don't need a biology degree to kill ducks — you need to know which of three groups is overhead, where it sits on the daily clock, and what the weather is about to do. That's the whole game.
The Four Moments of a Duck's Day
Birds run the same clock every day. When you hunt matters more than how many decoys you own.
4:30 AM
1. Roost
Birds sit safe, big water in the dark. Sacred ground — bust it and the neighborhood empties.
Scout it, never shoot it
LEGAL LIGHT
2. Morning Flight
The trade from roost to feed — low, looking, and workable. The classic 90 minutes.
Decoy them in the hole
11 AM
3. Midday Loaf
Back on quiet loafing water. Singles and pairs trickle all day if you stay put.
Jerk cord & patience
LAST 2 HRS
4. Evening Feed
The hard push to grain before dark — biggest wads, lowest light, fastest decisions.
Sit the X or run traffic
ID at a Distance
You'll name most birds before you see color.
Silhouette
Shape before color — pintail necks, spoonie bills, a can’s wedge profile — learn outlines and you’ll call birds at 300 yards.
Wingbeat
Rhythm tells the group — teal buzz, mallards row with slow authority, buffleheads blur. Fast and low usually means small duck.
Flock Shape
Formation is ID — pintails ride high in loose Vs, divers string low lines on the water, snows swirl in tornadoes.
What Moves Birds
Why Waterlands cross-references flyways with live weather.
Cold Front
The migration gas pedal. North winds behind a front bring new birds overnight — hunt the day of and the day after, then expect stale-bird lulls.
Wind
Wind is your decoy motor and your hide. Birds land into it, so set the spread with the wind at your back and an open hole in front.
Freeze-Up
Ice is a sorting machine: small water locks first, pushing everything to moving water and big reservoirs. Some of the year’s best hunts are the day the marsh skims.
Bluebird Day
High pressure, no wind, warm sun — birds fly early, sit all day, and stare at your spread. Go at legal light or scout instead.
